Azerbaijani outfit Sabah FA also made a statement, defeating Finnish hosts KuPS 2-0 in Kuopio. KuPS tend to be reliable performers in European competition relative to their modest domestic profile, so this is a result that underlines Sabah’s growing continental ambitions. Meanwhile, Irish champions Shamrock Rovers provided one of the more encouraging stories of the round, edging out Armenian side Ararat-Armenia 2-1 in Dublin — a narrow but meaningful home victory that keeps them firmly in contention for the next stage.

The one match that produced no clarity whatsoever was the goalless draw between Lincoln Red Imps and Mjällby AIF. The Gibraltar outfit have a history of causing mild surprises in these early rounds, and a blank draw at home keeps the tie entirely open ahead of the return leg. Both sides will feel the tie is very much within reach.

If the Champions League qualifying round had its share of tight finishes, the Conference League delivered the night’s most emphatic scoreline. FC Lugano dismantled Kosovo side Dukagjini 5-1 away from home — a result that doubles as both a serious statement of intent and a near-certain ticket to the next round. Scoring five goals on the road in European football at any level is a significant achievement, and the Swiss side will travel back to Lugano with the tie all but sealed.

Apollon Limassol were equally convincing in their own right, brushing aside Georgian club Dila 3-0 in Cyprus. The Cypriot side controlled proceedings from what the scoreline suggests was a comfortable afternoon, and they too look strong favourites to progress when the second legs come around.

Across both competitions, the early rounds are beginning to sort the genuinely prepared European sides from those still finding their footing after the summer break. Sturm Graz, Lugano, and Apollon Limassol head into their return fixtures with real confidence, while Hearts, KuPS, and Dila face significant deficits to overturn. Shamrock Rovers and Mjällby AIF, meanwhile, have everything still to play for — which promises at least two intriguing second legs in the days ahead.
