Five summer transfers that reshape Inter and AC Milan

Serie A

The dominant story of this summer’s transfer window belongs to Serie A, where Inter Milan and AC Milan have been the most active clubs — pulling in opposite directions. The headline move involves John Stones, who joined Inter from Manchester City as a free agent on 29 July, bringing top-level Premier League and Champions League experience to a defence that had already been reshaped earlier in the window. Stones is the marquee arrival that gives this Inter squad a different profile: older, more decorated in terms of team honours, and capable of organising a back line in the biggest games.

Inter’s summer has been defined by a clear-out as much as a rebuild. Denzel Dumfries departed for Real Madrid in a confirmed transfer at the start of July — the most significant departure and the move that will have the greatest financial and tactical impact. Losing an attacking full-back of his output to a club of Real Madrid’s stature represents a genuine test of Inter’s squad depth. To plug the goalkeeping gap left by Yann Sommer — who left for Club Brugge KV as a free agent in mid-July — Inter secured Ivan Provedel from Lazio in a confirmed transfer, with the deal registered in early July. Provedel is an experienced Serie A goalkeeper and a measured piece of business rather than a glamour signing.

Inter have also been busy moving younger players out on loan to gain minutes: Ebenezer Akinsanmiro has gone to Monza, Matteo Cocchi to Padova, Giacomo Stabile to Sudtirol, Christos Alexiou to AEK Athens, and De Pieri to Ascoli. The pattern is deliberate squad management — keeping prospects in the system while ensuring they play regularly at lower levels.

AC Milan’s window reads differently. Their most significant incoming transfer is Mario Gila, who arrived from Lazio in a confirmed transfer in early July — a defender who knows Serie A well and represents a structured upgrade. Milan also confirmed the arrival of Sankhoun Bocoum from Estac Troyes in a transfer registered at the end of July, suggesting they are casting a wider net across European markets to find value. On the outgoing side, goalkeeper Longoni left for Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent, Filippo Scotti departed to Avellino as a free agent, and Ibrahimovic moved to Jong AZ. Milan’s business has the look of a club refreshing its fringe and scouting smartly in France, while anchoring the squad with the Gila addition.

The Lazio side of the ledger is worth noting: they have sold both Gila and Provedel to direct rivals or fellow top-flight clubs, which raises questions about their own rebuild heading into the new campaign.

Ligue 1

Paris Saint-Germain's confirmed incoming transfers include Longoni from AC Milan on a free transfer, Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco, Mika Godts from Ajax, Ferran Torres from Barcelona, and Lucas Digne from Aston Villa.

Belgian Pro League

Club Brugge KV signed Yann Sommer on a free transfer from Inter on 13 July 2026. For Brugge, landing a goalkeeper of Sommer's calibre at no cost is a notable piece of recruitment — the kind of signing that can raise a squad's ceiling in European competition.
