La Liga

Wednesday 16 September produced the headline result of the night in La Liga, and perhaps across European football: Barcelona 7-2 Racing Santander. An extraordinary scoreline saw Racing torn apart in what will rank as one of the most emphatic domestic victories of the season so far. Seven goals from Barcelona, with two conceded to give it a chaotic edge, signals a side in fearsome attacking form.

Atlético Madrid were equally ruthless if rather more composed, putting four past Osasuna without reply to record a commanding 4-0 home win. A clean sheet to go with the four goals underlines the solidity Atlético brought to the evening, and Osasuna will have few happy memories of their visit to Atlético Madrid.

The third La Liga fixture saw Sevilla edge Deportivo La Coruña 1-0 away from home — a narrow but valuable win on the road.

Europa League

Benfica won 2-0 away at AC Milan in the Europa League on Wednesday.

Sparta Praha were equally impressive, cruising to a 4-1 win at Ararat-Armenia to make a strong early impression in the competition. At the other end of the scale, Omonia Nicosia pulled off a genuine upset, beating fancied Spanish visitors Celta Vigo 1-0 on home soil — a result that will raise eyebrows across the continent.

Sunderland beat AZ Alkmaar 1-0 at home, Lyon won 2-1 away at Anderlecht, and Olympiakos Piraeus beat Jagiellonia 2-1 at home.

Bayer Leverkusen were professional if unspectacular, seeing off Celje 2-0 at home. Two matches ended goalless: Sturm Graz and Rennes played out a tense 0-0, as did Hapoel Beer Sheva and Dinamo Zagreb — both sides leaving with a point but little to celebrate.
