Premier League

The weekend's most emphatic result in England came when Brighton dismantled Coventry 5-0 in a performance that will raise serious questions about the home side's top-flight credentials. Five goals without reply is a brutal scoreline by any measure, and it underlines the gap between the two clubs at this early stage of the season. Elsewhere, Manchester City edged Manchester United 1-0 in the Premier League on Sunday.

Bundesliga

RB Leipzig beat Hamburger SV 5-0 in the Bundesliga on Sunday. Bayern München, meanwhile, were made to work harder than expected, eventually coming through 2-1 against SV Elversberg. The scoreline suggests Elversberg gave a decent account of themselves before Bayern found a way past.

La Liga

The headline act in Spain was Atlético Madrid’s commanding 3-0 victory at Real Sociedad, a result that projects genuine title intent. Three goals on the road against a usually well-organised Sociedad side speaks to Atlético’s defensive solidity and clinical edge. Barcelona, meanwhile, had to work harder than they might have liked, eventually winning 4-2 at Levante — a result that keeps them ticking over but leaves questions about defensive vulnerability. At the other end of the table, Celta Vigo and Málaga shared a 1-1 draw, as did Getafe and Deportivo La Coruña, two tight, low-stakes contests that produced little to separate the sides.

Serie A

The shock of the Italian weekend was Sassuolo’s 3-2 victory over Juventus — a result that will draw scrutiny in Turin. Juventus, expected to be competing at the summit of Serie A, have been beaten by a side many tipped as relegation candidates, and that margin of defeat will feel even more uncomfortable given it came away from home. Lecce beat Monza 3-2. Napoli ground out a narrow 1-0 win over Bologna, the kind of efficient, workmanlike result that title-chasing sides need when the performance level is not quite there.

Ligue 1

Paris Saint-Germain won 1-0 at Stade Brestois. Lille were equally efficient, seeing off Estac Troyes 2-0.
