Saturday 12 September 2026 brought a packed schedule across Europe’s top five leagues.
Bundesliga
The standout result of the entire weekend came from Freiburg, where SC Freiburg dismantled Borussia Mönchengladbach 5-0 in a ruthless home performance. That scoreline will send shockwaves through the division and piles serious pressure on Gladbach. Elsewhere in an eventful set of German fixtures, Eintracht Frankfurt impressed with a 3-1 victory away at FSV Mainz 05, while Borussia Dortmund returned to winning ways with a comfortable 3-0 defeat of SC Paderborn 07. Bayer Leverkusen were held to a 2-2 draw away at FC Augsburg. 1899 Hoffenheim edged out VfB Stuttgart 2-1, and Cologne and Werder Bremen cancelled each other out in a 1-1 stalemate.
Premier League
Ipswich Town produced the surprise of the Premier League weekend, beating Crystal Palace 3-2 away from home. Nottingham Forest won 2-1 at Aston Villa. Arsenal continued their march with a clean-sheet 2-0 win at Sunderland, while Chelsea were held to a 2-2 draw by Hull City — a result that will prompt questions. Liverpool and Fulham played out a goalless stalemate, as did Tottenham and Everton in a forgettable 0-0. Bournemouth and Brentford shared the spoils in a lively 2-2 draw.
La Liga
Real Madrid got their weekend off to a statement start, thrashing Rayo Vallecano 4-1 to underline their early-season authority. The result suggests Real Madrid are clicking into gear. Espanyol, meanwhile, continued their solid start with a 2-0 away win at Osasuna, while Racing Santander took all three points against Alavés in a 2-1 victory. Athletic Club and Elche shared a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
Serie A
Italian football offered two draws of note. Lazio and AC Milan played out an entertaining 2-2, a result that neither side will be entirely satisfied with given their respective ambitions. Perhaps more surprising was Cagliari's 2-1 win at Atalanta — the Sardinians claiming a notable scalp on the road. Genoa and Frosinone shared a 1-1 draw in Serie A on Saturday 12 September 2026.
Ligue 1
French football’s weekend was defined largely by stalemates, with Paris FC holding Lyon to a goalless draw in a fixture that promised more and Le Havre doing the same against Angers. Strasbourg and Monaco drew 1-1, and Lorient and Toulouse drew 2-2. The one team to claim maximum points was Auxerre, who ground out a 1-0 home win over Nice — a result that will do their confidence no harm.
