Coventry produced a clinical home performance to beat Newcastle 4-1 in the Premier League, with goals either side of half-time and two more in the final ten minutes settling the contest.
How the game unfolded
Coventry took the lead in the sixth minute when Jack Rudoni converted from the penalty spot. The home side doubled their advantage three minutes into the second half, Sidiki Cherif making it 2-0 on 48 minutes.
Milan van Ewijk was booked for Coventry on 66 minutes. Four minutes later, Sven Botman pulled one back for Newcastle, assisted by Nico González, to make it 2-1 with 20 minutes remaining.
Ellis Simms, who had come on for Cherif on 78 minutes, scored on 81 minutes — assisted by Brandon Thomas-Asante — to restore the two-goal margin at 3-1. Joelinton was booked for Newcastle in the same minute. Stephen Mfuni, introduced from the bench on 83 minutes, then added a fourth on 86 minutes, assisted by Jay Dasilva, to make the final score 4-1.
The numbers
The statistics underline how thoroughly Coventry converted their opportunities despite being second best for much of the match in terms of possession. Newcastle dominated the ball with 67 per cent possession to Coventry’s 33 per cent, completed 472 accurate passes to Coventry’s 185, and attempted 19 shots to Coventry’s nine. Newcastle also had the higher expected goals figure, at 1.85 compared to Coventry’s 1.52. Yet Coventry’s six shots on goal matched Newcastle’s six, and Coventry’s goalkeeper made four saves to Newcastle’s two — a reflection of how the scoreline unfolded. Each side received one yellow card.
Newcastle had won two of their last three away games, the exception a 4-1 defeat at Leeds.
Conclusion
Coventry turned a game Newcastle shaded for large stretches into a convincing three-goal victory, with their substitutes playing a decisive role in the closing stages. Newcastle, who have now lost two of their last three across all competitions, were unable to build on Botman's goal and were undone by clinical finishing from a side that made the most of every opportunity it created.
