Juventus came from behind to beat Celta Vigo 2-1 in the league phase of the UEFA Europa League, with Randal Kolo Muani’s stoppage-time goal settling a match in which the visitors had to work hard to overturn an early deficit. The win extends Juventus’s unbeaten run across their last four games.

How the game unfolded

Celta Vigo took the lead in the 18th minute when Hugo Álvarez opened the scoring, finishing off an assist from Williot Swedberg. Swedberg was booked in the 39th minute, and the hosts carried their advantage into the break.

Lloyd Kelly was booked in the 54th minute. Juventus drew level four minutes later when Nick Woltemade scored to make it 1-1. Both coaches made changes in the last half-hour. Randal Kolo Muani came on for Juventus in the 64th minute, and when Jhon Lucumí entered from the bench in the 70th minute he was booked shortly afterwards, in the 72nd minute. Ilaix Moriba was booked for Celta Vigo in the 84th minute.

With the match level and time running out, Kolo Muani settled it. In the second minute of stoppage time he converted an assist from Andrea Cambiaso to make it 2-1 and earn Juventus the three points in this league phase meeting.

The numbers

Juventus had the better of the statistics throughout. They finished with 22 shots to Celta Vigo’s nine, and 17 of those Juventus attempts came from inside the box compared to five for the hosts. Juventus put six shots on target; Celta Vigo managed two. The hosts’ goalkeeper was called upon four times, while the Juventus goalkeeper was tested just once. Both sides picked up two yellow cards. Juventus’s expected goals figure was 1.75, against 1.1 for Celta Vigo.

Across their last five games in all competitions, Juventus have won three, drawn one and lost one, scoring 12 and conceding five. Celta Vigo, meanwhile, have won one, drawn two and lost two across their last five, scoring seven and conceding four.

Conclusion

A late intervention from Kolo Muani, on as a substitute, ultimately decided a match in which Juventus were the more productive side in attack despite going behind. Celta Vigo’s early lead through Álvarez proved insufficient, and Juventus’s clinical use of their chances — and their depth — earned them the points in the closing minutes of this league phase match.
