Introduction

Espanyol delivered a dominant and thoroughly convincing performance to claim a 3-0 victory over Levante in La Liga. The result was never seriously in doubt after the hosts asserted themselves early and never relinquished control, with R. Fernandez Jaen starring as a double scorer. The win underlined Espanyol’s superiority on the day, while Levante were left with precious little to show for their afternoon’s work.

How the Game Unfolded

Espanyol set the tone almost immediately, with R. Fernandez Jaen breaking the deadlock as early as the fifth minute to give the home side a dream start. The goal settled Espanyol quickly and placed Levante under early pressure, forcing them into a reactive role they would struggle to escape throughout the contest.

The first half was not without its flashpoints. Urko González was booked on 37 minutes. Three minutes later, however, the match was effectively put beyond Levante’s reach when Fernandez Jaen struck again on 40 minutes, this time with Javier Hernández providing the assist.

The second half saw Espanyol remain composed and in control, even as the card count continued to climb. Álex Calatrava was booked on 63 minutes, and Javier Hernández followed into the referee’s book five minutes later.

With the game already won, Espanyol added gloss to the scoreline on 80 minutes when T. Dolan converted with R. Bauza — introduced via a 72nd-minute switch — credited as the assist. Dolan was promptly withdrawn just a minute later. Espanyol continued to manage the game to its conclusion with further late substitutions, seeing out the three points in comfortable fashion.

The Numbers

The statistics painted an emphatic picture of Espanyol’s superiority. They registered 16 total shots to Levante’s four, with six of those efforts finding the target compared to zero from the visitors. The home side’s expected goals figure of 1.55 versus Levante’s 0.28 underscores just how lopsided the contest was in terms of genuine scoring opportunities, even if the final scoreline flattered the actual threat levels to some extent.

In terms of possession, Espanyol held a 54% to 46% advantage and completed 386 of their 457 passes for an accuracy rate of 84%. Levante, interestingly, matched that passing accuracy at 85%, but their efficiency in possession did not translate into attacking threat. Levante’s goalkeeper was called upon to make three saves across the 90 minutes, while Espanyol’s goalkeeper was not required to make a single stop — a testament to Levante’s inability to test the opposition between the posts. Espanyol committed 17 fouls and collected three yellow cards, while Levante were booked on zero occasions despite committing seven fouls.

Conclusion

This was as one-sided a La Liga contest as the scoreline suggests. Espanyol were clinical, organised and dangerous throughout, with Fernandez Jaen’s brace and Dolan’s late strike sealing a well-earned clean sheet victory. Levante, meanwhile, offered almost nothing offensively and will need significant improvement if they are to compete more meaningfully in future fixtures. All the momentum on the day belonged firmly to Espanyol.
